Scrambling for Money and Resources before, during, and after the Crash:
8 Ways to Profit if OPEC Dumps the Dollar (MoneyMorning.com)
..."Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad dropped a bombshell. And while it wasn’t a nuclear one, it might as well have been. He stated on the record at a rare gathering of the heads of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) member nations have expressed a real interest in converting their cash reserves from the beleaguered U.S. greenback to the European euro. More specifically, Ahmadinejad referred to the U.S. dollar as "a worthless piece of paper."
US mission to Arctic will lay claim to gas reserves (Telegraph.co.uk)
..."Canada and the US are teaming up to for a research mission to the Arctic continental shelf as part of their bid to lay claim to the vast oil and natural gas reserves believed to lie beneath the Arctic Ocean floor. A US Coast Guard cutter will set out on Thursday on a three-week trip to map a relatively unexplored area known as the Chukchi borderland, about 600 miles north of Alaska. The cutter Healy will then launch again on September 6 accompanied by Canadian scientists aboard an icebreaker, who will conduct further tests to help identify the extent of the continental shelf north of Alaska. The US is attempting to prove the Alaskan continental shelf stretches far beyond the 200-mile limit where coastal countries have sovereign rights over natural resources."
In Arctic sea, oil rush is on for several nations (SFGate.com)
..."It's a scramble for the spoils of global warming as the rapid melting of Arctic sea ice is opening access to previously unreachable deposits of oil and gas, setting off a race by northern nations - including the United States, Canada and Russia - to claim them. The pursuit of those resources will be underscored this week as the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Healy sails north from Barrow, Alaska, on Thursday to map the sea floor of the Chukchi Cap, an area at the northern edge of the Beaufort Sea. The maps could bolster U.S. claims to the area as part of its extended outer continental shelf. The U.S. Geological Survey confirmed last month what the oil industry had long suspected when the agency released an estimate that the area north of the Arctic Circle may hold as much as 90 billion barrels of oil and 1,669 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, or roughly 13 percent of the world's total undiscovered oil and 30 percent of the undiscovered natural gas."
Unfurling the Flag of the United States of Greed (CommonDreams.org)
..."For the past 28 years our leadership has privatized our self-governing mainframe. We effectively eliminated corporate regulation. Consequently, our commerce, our small businesses and our workers’ wages suffer while multinational corporations assume control of our wealth. Once the Federal Communications Commission lost effective jurisdiction over our airwaves, mergers and acquisitions by faceless, bottom line-driven multinational companies created a system of subjective media ownership that now controls the information we receive. And the little guy, the local broadcast owner and the hometown newspaper, gets crushed under the weight of these huge conglomerates. Private companies are fighting our wars. And though mercenary contractors make up half our occupying force, they don’t suffer the same casualties. In July 2007, the U.S. Department of Labor estimated that about 1,000 private contractors had died while serving in Iraq. Our enlisted men and women — working for a fraction of what the mercenaries get paid — do the lion’s share of the dying. And because our media are biased, we see no images of their sacrifice."
Why 4% Food Inflation Figure Is Bullshit - USA TODAY Article (Madconomist.com)
..."Rebecca Woods and her family in Lathrop, Mo., have turned to the land, planting hundreds of vegetables and relying on their own chickens for eggs. Retirees Sally and Robert Jones of Alpine, Texas, have reverted back to some of the menus that got them through graduate school many years ago, living on beans, stews and soups."

Top News of the day:
Washington Risks Nuclear War by Miscalculation (InformationClearinghouse.info)
..."11/08/08 'Market Oracle' -- The dramatic military attack by the military of the Republic of Georgia on South Ossetia in the last days has brought the world one major step closer to the ultimate horror of the Cold War era—a thermonuclear war between Russia and the United States—by miscalculation. What is playing out in the Caucasus is being reported in US media in an alarmingly misleading light, making Moscow appear the lone aggressor. The question is whether George W. Bush and Dick Cheney are encouraging the unstable Georgian President, Mikhail Saakashvili in order to force the next US President to back the NATO military agenda of the Bush Doctrine. This time Washington may have badly misjudged the possibilities, as it did in Iraq , but this time with possible nuclear consequences."
O.C. Sheriff tightens policy on concealed-weapons permits (LATimes.com)
..."Applicants must prove there is a legitimate threat to their safety and agree to undergo psychological, polygraph or medical testing. The tightened rules also apply to those who already have permits."
